Kindergarten: Dickson Fire Department visits on 9/11/09

Kindergarten at DES was excited to meet Officer Keith and Officer Shawn on 9/11/09. The Dickson Fire Department graciously volunteered to visit classrooms and read to us in honor of the fireman who fought to rescue others in the 9/11/01 attacks. We heard the firemen read and discuss a patriotic kindergarten book about our constitution, We The People and observed pictures showing Man's Best Friends (rescue dogs) assisting firemen, playing and resting from 9/11.

We also viewed pictures of the Lucky Six from Ladder Company 6 NY, NY who were saved on 9/11/01 because they were rescuing a Grandmother from Brooklyn. Because they stopped to help a grandmother who could not go on, they all were spared in the collapse. The firemen in Ladder 6 and the grandmother were safe on a very small section of stairwell that remained intact.
Finally the firemen discussed how to exit your home if it is on fire and how to stop, drop and roll if your clothes are ever on fire. This will be a great thing to know and a good preview and spark for our field trip to the fire department in Oct. Students and teachers alike enjoyed the time together learning and seeing the firemen in their full dress blue uniforms.
